Methodology & Data Sources

Trust is the entire point of this tool. Here is exactly how we source and calculate every rating you see.

Data Sources

Recall history is compiled from the FDA's pet food recall database, official company press releases, and public regulatory announcements. We do not use anonymous user reports as a primary source.

Risk Score Calculation

Each brand's 0-100 risk score weighs recall frequency, recall severity (contamination vs. labeling issues), recency, resolution status, and the presence of ingredients flagged by veterinary nutrition literature.

Controversial Ingredients

Ingredients are flagged when they appear in peer-reviewed research, FDA investigations (e.g. grain-free & DCM), or are banned/restricted in comparable pet food markets. Severity reflects strength of evidence, not certainty of harm.

Review Cadence

Brand pages display a last_reviewed date. High-risk and recently-recalled brands are reviewed more frequently. Subscribe on any brand page to get notified the moment a review changes.
